MLSTP/PSD wins municipal elections in São Tomé and Príncipe while those defeated complain of vote buying MLSTP/PSD wins municipal elections in São Tomé and Príncipe while those defeated complain of vote buying 26 July 2010

The MLSTP/PSD appears to have won municipal and regional elections in four of the six municipalities in the tiny island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe this Sunday. Political force ADI, however, led by Patrice Trovoada, also came out as one of the main victors in the suffrage, winning the two largest districts in the country, Água Grande and Mé-Zochi. On the island of Príncipe, José Cassandra of the Union for Change and Progress was re-elected as the president of the regional autonomous government. The other political forces in the country, however, complain that the MMLSTP/PSD bought votes on a massive scale.

Although it lost on the island of Príncipe, the MLSTP/PSD managed to increase the number of municipalities it governs from one to four. Even on Príncipe, where it lost, the political formation saw an increase in the number of its voters, according to data released this morning.

The president re-elect of the regional government of Príncipe was supported by three of São Tomé’s four largest political parties: the ADI, the PCD and the MDFM-PL. The coalition won all of the seats up for grabs in the Príncipe Regional Assembly.

In addition to regional elections on the island of Príncipe, São Tomeans yesterday elected municipal officials in the six districts on the island of São Tomé: Água Grande, Cantagalo, Caué, Lembá, Lobata and Mé-Zochi. According to unconfirmed figures broadcast this morning by the National Radio, the main winner in the municipal election was the MLSTP-PSD, followed by the ADI, the PCD and the MDFM-PL, in that order.

The ADI, led by Patrice Trovoada, the son of former president Miguel Trovoada, was also a major winner, having won the two largest municipalities in the country, Água Grande and Zé-Zochi.

The main losers in the election were the PCD and the MDFM-PL, the latter the party of President Fradique de Menezes. Indeed, the PCD lost the two municipal chambers it governed up to now.

This morning, the adversaries of the MLSTP-PSD joined forces to denounce what they say was large-scale vote-buying by the party. The MLSTP-PSD, however, said the practice was common to all of São Tomé and Príncipe’s political parties.
